What we’ve found is that self-portraiture has created its own sub-culture – we asked to see your faces, and we got a lot of obscured representations of yourself. We love that. While it seems simple to sit in front of your camera with a trigger or a self timer – it has proven to be almost ‘too vulnerable’, and instead your submissions displayed more than just your face. Wether its your sillouhette, your environment, a staged moment, your body, it’s ALL self-portraiture, and we’re loving that you didn’t take the theme ‘too literally’.
While we did receive many phone selfies, their vulnerability seemed fleeting. The effort to make a portrait was lost in its technical convenience, and while we find that theoretically worth investigating, these portraits became memorable because there was a concerted effort to make a photographic representation of ‘self’ rather than just facial documentation.
We were blown away by some of the sculptural submissions – making an image of yourself, printing it, and manipulating it so it again has a three-dimensional presence.
